MONTREAL -- A race-track worker at the Canadian Grand Prix was killed Sunday after he slipped under the wheel of a crane at the end of the Formula One event. Officials said the man was escorting the crane as it moved Esteban Gutierrezs Sauber car, which did not finish the Montreal race. The accident occurred shortly after the checkered flag waved to signal the end of the race, a major weekend sporting event for the city that draws hundreds of thousands of fans to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. "The recovery vehicle had lifted the car to return it to the pits, and while doing this, the worker dropped his radio and attempted to pick it up," Matteo Bonciani, F1s head spokesman, said as he read a statement to reporters at the track. "As he did this, he stumbled and was hit and run over by the recovery vehicle." The man, in critical condition, was airlifted to Sacre-Coeur Hospital by helicopter after being stabilized by race-track trauma nurses. "Unfortunately, the worker succumbed to his injuries at the hospital," said Bonciani, adding that organizers wanted "to communicate their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim." Officials would not immediately release the identity of the victim, but said he was a member of the Automobile Club de lIle Notre Dame. Hospital officials said in a statement that he was a volunteer at the track. "Its terrible," said a visibly shaken Francois Dumontier, the Grand Prixs promoter. "It tarnishes the superb weekend that we had. I am devastated to learn this, I dont have any other words." Gutierrez tweeted about the incident from his verified Twitter account: "My dearest condolences to the family of the marshal who lost his life today, our prayers for him & his family. RIP." Earlier Sunday, Dumontier said the crane operator couldnt see the man when he hit him. "Unfortunately, the vehicles wheel passed over his body," he said before the worker died in hospital. The events chief medical officer said a physician, who happened to be nearby when the accident occurred, rushed to the injured worker. The man was still conscious when the doctor arrived at his side, he added. "He went there within 30 seconds (and) started stabilizing him," said Jacques Bouchard. He said trauma workers at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve treated the worker enough to have him taken to hospital by helicopter. He was declared dead a few hours later. Bouchard said the worker, about 38 years old, had been working at the track for 10 years. He said the man was walking with the crane to help stabilize the Sauber car, as it hung from a cable. This wasnt the first death at a Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. In 1982, Riccardo Paletti, a rookie driver for the Osella team, was killed when he slammed into Didier Pironis stalled car on the starting grid. Other F1 events have also witnessed deaths on the track. A marshal was killed at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix when Canadian Jacques Villeneuves BAR Honda car leapfrogged another car and flew into a concrete retaining wall. The crash sent all four tires and other debris across the track and into a fence. Only six months earlier, a fire marshal at the 2000 Italian Grand Prix died when he was struck by a wheel thrown from a multi-car pileup on the first lap of the race. In 1977, at the South African Grand Prix, race marshal Frederick van Vuuren died in the same incident that killed driver Tom Pryce. Van Vuuren had run onto the track to attend to a stalled car when he was struck by Pryces car. The fire extinguisher he was carrying flew out of his hands and hit Pryce in the head. Other Canadian cities have also had racing-related deaths. At the 1996 Toronto Molson Indy, an official died in the same crash that killed rookie driver Jeff Krasnoff. Another track official was killed at the 1990 Vancouver Molson Indy when the car he was pushing on the track was rammed by another car. SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Kawhi Leonard ripped the ball away from Ben McLemore and drove the other way for a three-point play. Then the next time down the court, Leonard grabbed it away from McLemore and scored on the other end. Those two plays turned the momentum San Antonios way and sent the Spurs home with a very successful season-opening trip following a 102-94 victory over the Kings on Thursday night that spoiled the regular season opener at Sacramentos new downtown arena. He took two away in a row and said, `Gimme that. He just grabbed it away from whoever it was, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. He just grabbed it and took it twice in a row. I dont see many people doing that.Few people are doing what Leonard is early this season. After scoring a career-high 35 points to go with five steals in a 129-100 season-opening win at Golden State on Tuesday night, Leonard had 30 points and five steals against the Kings.Leonard is the first player to put together back-to-back 30-point, five-steal games since Eddie Jones did it for Miami in December 2002.You see players play at an extremely high level on offense, but this guys does it on both ends, teammate Pau Gasol said. Its hard to say where hes more exceptional. Hes a very special player.Leonard helped dampen the excitement for the first regular season game at the new arena on an emotional night as fans remembered how close the franchise was to moving to Seattle before Vivek Ranadive bought the team in 2013 and reached a deal to build the arena. It didnt end as well despite a strong night from DeMarcus Cousins, who led Sacramento with 37 points and 16 rebounds. As much as this city has fought, the fans were more than deserving of this night, Cousins said. I wished we could have sealed the deal with a win.The Kings built a nine-point lead midway through the third period before Leonard and tthe Spurs put it away.dddddddddddd San Antonio went on a 16-2 run and held Sacramento without a basket for the final 7:20 of the period to take a 76-71 lead into the fourth. The Kings missed nine straight shots and Leonard then had the steals from McLemore.I just tried to do something for us, lighting up our defense a little bit, Leonard said. The Spurs built the lead to 10 points early in the fourth quarter before Cousins and Arron Afflalo made two baskets each in a 12-2 run that tied the game. But San Antonio pulled away late for the win.TIP-INSSpurs: The last San Antonio player with at least 30 points and five steals in consecutive games was Alvin Robertson in 1986. ... LaMarcus Aldridge scored 16 for San Antonio and reserves David Lee and Dewayne Dedmon added 12 apiece.Kings: Rudy Gay had 17 points but shot just 3 for 10. ... Sacramento shot 40 percent for the game. ... The Kings have lost seven straight to the Spurs.OPENING NIGHTThere were many luminaries on hand for the arena opening. Former Kings great Chris Webber sat next to Ranadive at courtside, Commissioner Adam Silver and his predecessor were in attendance, as well as several politicians integral in getting the arena built, most notably Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.I think its a borderline miracle from where we were in 2013 to be here in 2016, a year earlier than they originally pledged to have an arena done, Silver said. To be done, to be here on opening night with the building completely finished with strong local ownership, its everything a league could hope for.UP NEXTSpurs: Play New Orleans in their home opener on Saturday.Kings: Host Minnesota on Saturday in a matchup of two of the leagues top big men in Cousins and Karl-Anthony Towns.
