RENO, Nev. -- Greg Chalmers is trying to leave his rivals behind in the Barracuda Championship -- and not get too far ahead of himself. Its a necessity at this level if you want to be successful, said Chalmers, the 42-year-old Australian who leads active PGA Tour players in starts without a victory at 385.The left-hander birdied five of the final six holes Saturday at Montreux to increase his lead to six points over Ben Martin and Gary Woodland in the modified Stableford scoring event.Chalmers had seven birdies and a bogey for a 15-point round and 39-point total in the scoring system that awards eight points for double eagle, five points for eagle, two points for birdie and deducts a point for bogey and three points for double bogey or worse.Theres a long way to go, and theres plenty of players capable of shooting a lot of points out here, Chalmers said. This golf course can give you a lot of points, if you drive it well, get it into play, start making a few putts. Ill get out there tomorrow and get that first tee shot in play and get after it.The scoring system awards aggressive play. In conventional scoring, Chalmers was 16 under with rounds of 67, 68 and 65. Martin was 15 under, and Woodland 13 under.Chalmers has only conditional tour status. He has made six starts this season on the PGA Tour, tying for 58th in the first in China in November and missing the cut in the rest, and also has played nine Web.com Tour events.Martin had eight birdies in a 16-point round, the best score of the week. The course dries out in the afternoon, the wind picks up, it plays a little tougher, said Martin, the winner last season in Las Vegas for his first tour title. I was really happy. I was bogey-free. Eight birdies today. Ive been trending in the right direction.Woodland had an 11-point round. The 2013 champion birdied all four par-5 holes.I played beautifully all day. I didnt get as much out of it as I would like to, Woodland said. Hit a lot of good shots, a lot of good putts. I would like to see a couple more go in. But Im excited about the way Im playing, and Im looking forward to tomorrow.Chalmers, Martin and most of the players are fighting for a spot in the British Open in two weeks at Royal Troon in Scotland. Because of the West Virginia floods that led to The Greenbrier Classic being canceled next week, a spot was transferred to the leading player not already eligible at Montreux. Woodland was the only player in the top 23 who has already qualified for the Open. That would be awesome, Martin said. I put myself in position to get there tomorrow. And this tournament will get me in the Open, the PGA, Maui, so theres a ton of upsides to play well tomorrow.Scotlands Martin Laird was fourth with 28 points after a six-point round. Steve Wheatcroft scored nine points to reach 27, and Will MacKenzie was another point back after an eight-point round.Wes Roach topped the group at 25 after a 13-point round. He had seven birdies and closed with a bogey on the par-5 18thI played well. Hit the ball great, Roach said. Obviously, not what the finish that I was looking for. But that doesnt take away from the positives of the day. Hit the ball well, gave myself a lot of good chances, made seven birdies.Colt Knost and Bronson Burgoon also had 25 points.Kelly Kraft had a 15-point round to reach 22. He had eight birdies and a closing bogey.I actually hit it the same I did as the first two days, buy finally made some putts, Kraft said. I worked hard, putted yesterday for about two hours after my round and found a little something and just started kind of rolling in some 10-, 15-footers early and got it rolling. He lost his drive to the right on the par-5 18th. BATON ROUGE, La. -- Jalen Hurts broke loose for a 21-yard touchdown run to break a scoreless tie early in the fourth quarter, and No. 1 Alabamas defense thoroughly stifled Leonard Fournette and LSU in a 10-0 victory over the No. 13 Tigers on Saturday night. The Crimson Tide (9-0, 6-0) won for the sixth straight time against LSU (5-3, 3-2) and remained alone in first place in the SEC West -- a game ahead of Auburn.Hurts, a freshman who has exceeded expectations by establishing himself as one of the most dynamic, explosive players in college football, was the games leading rusher with 114 yards on 20 carries. He also completed 10 of 19 passes for 107 yards.LSU had had its share of big plays -- but all on defense, forcing Hurts into an early interception and late fumble. But LSUs offense could not capitalize against menacing defensive end Jonathan Allen and the rest of Alabamas suffocating defense. The Tigers finished with just 125 total yards. Fournette, whose 2015 Heisman Trophy hopes faded when he was held to 31 yards on 19 carries in Tuscaloosa last year, had 35 yards on 17 carries. One game after touchdown runs of 78, 76 and 59 yards against Mississippi, Fournettes longest run against the Crimson Tide was 9 yards.LSUs Danny Etling completed 11 of 24 passes for 92 yards and also was intercepted once in the fourth quarter, leading to a late Alabama field goal. Alabama had five sacks, one more than LSUs offense had allowed in any other game this season. Allen, linebackers Rashaan Evans and Ryan Anderson; and end Dalvin Tomlinson each sacked Etling, while Rueben Foster and Tim Williams combined on a sack. Both teams entered the game with highly respected, play-making defenses and those units dictated the play most of the game, which was scoreless through three quarters.LSU intercepted Hurts pass on the games opening possession, but could not mmove the ball and had to settle for a field goal try, which was partially blocked by Alabamas Ronnie Harrison.ddddddddddddAlabama did not drive into field goal range until about 6 minutes remained in the second quarter, but Adam Griffiths kick hooked wide left.At the end of the first half, a defensive stand by LSU deep in Alabama territory got the Tigers the ball back at the Crimson Tide 47, but Alabamas defense did not allow LSU to approach field goal range. The Tide appeared to be on the brink of the games first points after Hurts lofted a pin-point, play-action pass deep down the middle of the field to ArDarius Stewart for a 52-yard gain to the LSU 8, but four plays later, LSU linebacker Duke Riley and end Arden Key dropped Hurts for a 5-yard loss on fourth-and-goal from the 1.The Tigers defense came up big yet again when end Frank Heron sacked and stripped Hurts, and Key recovered on the Alabama 42. But the LSU offense only went backward, hurt by a delay-of-game and intentional grounding penalties.THE TAKEAWAYAlabama: LSU coach Ed Orgeron said earlier this week that Alabama might have the best defense in college football history, and he might be right.LSU: As much as LSU has tried open up its offense by changing formations and passing more, Etling didnt have the poise, or the blocking to succeed against Alabama. LSUs running game suffered because of the Tigers inability to throw.POLL IMPLICATIONSAlabama: Alabama continues to strengthen its case as the best team in the nation.LSU: The Tigers might not tumble out of the Top 25 because of how close it played the nations top team, but it will fall.UP NEXTAlabama: The Tide hosts Mississippi State next Saturday.LSU: The Tigers travel to meet Arkansas next weekend.
