Martin Truex Jr. will remain at Furniture Row Racing through the 2018 season after signing a two-year contract extension. The team announced Thursday that Truex would have sponsorship from Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats, which will increase its number of races from 12 this year to 16 starting in 2017. The team is operated by Furniture Row owner Barney Visser, who also uses the car as a way to promote his furniture outlet and its products.Truex, who has four career wins, finished fourth in the 2015 season standings and is ninth in the Chase-eligibility standings this year. He has just one 2016 win, but he has led more laps (17.29 percent) and more miles (17.71 percent) than any other driver on the circuit. The performance this year is even more impressive considering the team switched from Chevrolet to Toyota, forming an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing. That alliance nearly paid dividends early, with Truex coming inches shy of winning the Daytona 500.I am pleased that were going to continue our momentum from this season, said the 36-year-old Truex, who is in his third year at Furniture Row. This is where I want to be, driving the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota.Weve come a long way in a short period of time. There are many reasons to feel excited and optimistic about the future of our racing program.Prior to coming to Furniture Row, Truex had a relationship with Bass Pro Shops; the company had sponsored him in his first five years in Cup at Dale Earnhardt Inc. and Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.Martin has proved over and over that he is one of the blue-chip drivers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and we are elated that he will continue to drive our No. 78 Toyota, team president Joe Garone said.Furniture Row is a single-car organization -- but might not be for long. Garone has said the organization is working on a deal to start a second car. When asked earlier this week if the team had completed the deal to put JGR driver Erik Jones in a second car with sponsorship from 5-Hour Energy, Garone said the team was still working on the plans for a second car. The Pegasus World Cup, the planned $12 million race announced this year by The Stronach Group, has been assigned a Grade 1 rating for 2017 by the committee that assigns grades to U.S. stakes races, the committee announced on Friday. The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association voted to assign the highest rating in the U.S. to the race after noting that the Pegasus is expected to replace the Grade 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla., on the U.S. racing calendar. While the decision by the committee was not unexpected, the assignment of a Grade 1 rating lends cachet to a race that is being run under highly unusual conditions. For the race, The Stronach Group, the owner of Gulfstream Park and a handful of other tracks, has said it has sold 12 berths in the race to individuals and partnerships for $1 million each.dddddddddddd The berths guarantee the holders a spot in the starting gate and a cut of the net revenue from handle and sponsorships connected to the race. With a purse of $12 million, the Pegasus will be the richest race held in the world, provided the race goes off as planned. Scheduled for Jan. 28, the race is for horses ages 4 and up and will be run at 1-1/8 miles. The Donn Handicap, which last year had a $500,000 purse, was also run at 1-1/8 miles. If the owners of the berths do not own horses who fit the conditions or level of competition, they are expected to cut deals with other owners to sell the berths outright or lease horses for the purposes of the race. No other race in the U.S. has ever been run under such conditions. ' ' '
